George F. Nesbitt & Company

The George F. Nesbitt & Co., of New York, New York, was awarded contracts for the manufacture of United States stamped envelopes from October 25, 1852 to March 31, 1870. The 'House of Nesbitt', as it came to be known, was established in 1795 by Joseph C. Spear, an uncle of George F. Nesbitt. As a boy, Nesbitt was apprenticed to his uncle as a printer, and later, for a few years, associated with him as a partner.
